Seasonal Advice: When to Trim Your Trees

Tree maintenance can help prevent damage to your home. Now is a great time to give the trees in your yard some extra love and attention.

Seems our neighbors are starting to begin maintenance on their trees, so why not us too? But where do we start? Should we trim our trees or mulch around them on our own or should we call in an expert to take care of it for us? Let’s take a couple minutes to talk about when to trim ours trees… or not.

Trees… To Trim or Not to Trim?

Tree trimming helps manage risk by removing branches that are likely to interfere with power lines, fall on the roof, smash through windows, or otherwise wreak havoc on your property and your life.

But before taking out your shears, study up on pruning essentials. If you’re new to tree maintenance, the Arbor Day Foundation provides a helpful guide to tree trimming along with instructional videos.

Typically, the best time of year to prune or trim your trees is when they are dormant in winter before early spring. If you wait too long and the temperatures begin to rise, so will the speed that the sap flows from the tree. Here are three things to keep in mind when considering trimming your trees:

  1. Avoid trimming your trees in late spring and early summer
Trimming a tree in the winter is also healthier for the tree itself and will prevent the excessive flow of sap from escaping and making a mess either or the tree or in your yard.
  2. Make sure the tools you use are sharpened and clean
Using chainsaws that have come in contact with infected bark or using a dull set of pruners or hand saws can damage your tree further or encourage disease.
  3. Hiring a professional is less expensive than a trip to the emergency room
When you have a limb that is too high to reach or close to powers lines, or maybe you just don’t feel comfortable trimming your trees on your own, always seek the advice of a professional arborist in your community.

Remember, you can always hire an arborist or yard specialist to help you out if you don’t feel confident making these changes yourself. Of course, if your plans include trimming back branches that hang over your roof or an insured structure, be sure you hire a qualified, insured professional to assist you.
